Global Academic Giants to Storm Mumbai: Five Top-Tier Universities Set to Open Branch Campuses by 2026

Mumbai is set to become a global education hub by 2026 as five elite universities from the UK, US, and Australia establish branch campuses under NEP 2020. Institutions like the University of Bristol and Illinois Tech will offer international degrees and identical curricula locally, eliminating foreign living costs while providing high-end placements and merit-based scholarships.

The long-standing compulsion for Indian students to cross seven seas in pursuit of world-class education is poised to end as five of the world’s leading universities prepare to establish direct branch campuses in Mumbai starting in 2026. Under the aegis of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this landmark initiative brings three prestigious institutions from the United Kingdom, one from the United States, and one from Australia to Indian soil. These campuses will offer the exact same curriculum and degrees as their parent institutions, ensuring that the quality of education remains indistinguishable from their international counterparts.

Standing at the forefront of this academic revolution is the University of Bristol, ranked 51st in the QS World Rankings, which will establish its campus near the scenic Powai Lake. Focusing on high-demand sectors such as Data Science, Economics, and Immersive Arts, the university has set its annual fees between 15 lakh and 17 lakh. In a significant administrative collaboration, the institution has partnered with the Maharashtra Government to provide 100% scholarships to ten deserving students.

The University of Western Australia, holding a QS World Ranking of 77, will anchor its operations in Marol, Andheri East. With a primary focus on Business and Data Science, the university intends to maintain a strict emphasis on quality by limiting initial seat intake. While fees are yet to be announced, the institution has confirmed that scholarships will be awarded based on both merit and financial need.

Returning to the Powai hub, the University of York, ranked 169th globally, will cater to enthusiasts of Business Management, Artificial Intelligence, and Finance. Students at this campus will benefit from a global partner network and exchange programs, with annual fees ranging from 12.5 lakh to 16.5 lakh. To incentivize academic excellence, the university will offer annual scholarship renewals for students maintaining a minimum 70% score.

Representing the rich heritage of Scotland, the over 500-year-old University of Aberdeen, ranked 262nd globally, will initially settle in Powai with future plans for Navi Mumbai. It will offer four-year Scottish-pattern degree courses in Data Science, AI, and Economics, providing a 'Pioneer Scholarship' worth 2 lakh for its inaugural batch. Rounding out the quintet is the Illinois Institute of Technology from the United States, ranked 591st, which will be situated in the Godrej Business District of Vikhroli. Surrounded by over 100 multinational companies to facilitate internship opportunities, Illinois Tech will charge between 16 lakh and 20 lakh annually and notably does not require SAT scores for admission.

The admission process for the 2026 session is expected to commence shortly, emphasizing 12th-grade marks, graduation scores, personal statements, and interviews. This transition serves as a strategic boon for Indian scholars, eliminating the exorbitant costs of international living while providing internationally recognized degrees. By situating these academic powerhouses within Mumbai’s business hubs, the initiative significantly enhances placement prospects, marking a transformative era for Indian higher education.
